Pantheon Review – Angel

Review outdated as of 4/30/15. Updated ratings will be released each NA godfest.
The Angels appear to exist solely to push certain archetypes, the first time this could be said about a REM pantheon. While it’s easy to fixate on their obvious uses, this shouldn’t distract one from perceiving their true value. While their leader skills won’t impress anyone at first glance, their clauses that boost either HP or RCV make them relevant if unspectacular 14x ATK leaders. Their uses as subs appear narrow, but the raw power of their actives shouldn’t be overlooked, particularly when GungHo is looking to push new team types. That being said, they are unspectacular in the current state of the game, a fact that should weigh heavily in deciding whether to roll for them or not

Rozuel – C
Pros
  • Anti-bind utility
  • Fire’s only unbindable with bind recovery
  • Heartmaking is now relevant
Cons
  • No offensive awakenings
  • No RCV
  • Leader RCV bonus least relevant of the pantheon
Notes
Unfortunately, Rozuel isn’t to Urd as what Liu Bei is to Verdandi, but she still has value. While not providing any RCV is a shame, she brings much needed bind utility to fire and heartmaking is consistently becoming more relevant, both because of healing requirements of endgame dungeons as well as for leaders like Juggler and Gadius that depend on them for their ATK bonuses. That being said, Rozuel is certainly the worst of the pantheon; hopefully she gets some help sooner rather than later.

Famiel – B-
Pros
  • Full board orb change tailor-made for U&Y
  • Leader HP boost is perfect for a healer team
Cons
  • Uses outside U&Y?
Notes
It’s pretty obvious Famiel is a good fit on a U&Y team, but it’s questionable whether she’s (he’s? its?) even an ideal sub for them since you can’t use a subsequent orb changer to increase your water orb count and still activate your 25x. Outside of U&Y, she combos with Kamui and Hatsume to make 50% water boards and with Gabriel to make 50% water, 25% light and 25% heart boards, but it’s questionable how useful that is. Sadly, she doesn’t interact well with Andromeda which is unfortunate considering how powerful the Juggler + Pandora combo is. For now, Famiel is underwhelming, but a full board orb change always has great potential.

Ruel – B-
Pros
  • More G/D devil support
  • Fits well on a Zuo team
  • 1 TPA
Cons
  • Uses outside Zuo?
  • Zuo not on NA servers
  • Lack of of devil orb changers limits leader skill
Notes
When Ruel was first released, it was questionable where she’d be useful. Now she’s a great fit for the recently released Zuo. She should serve as an example for the rest of the Angels; while they may seem to have little or no use now, GungHo has a plan… which mostly involves making ways to get you to spend money rolling for these Angels. While the Angels may never have the flexibility of something like the China girls, they will certainly create uses for them.

Ariel – B
Pros
  • Powerful orb spawner on 4-turn cooldown
  • Bolsters light attackers
  • 1 TPA
Cons
  • Of the Angels, she currently has the least downside
  • With a severe lack of light-attacker orb changers, running an Athena lead is likely just better
Notes
Ariel is the one Angel that has more than one or two obvious sub applications: bolstering the emerging light-attacker combination — particularly L/R Amaterasu — while also slotting in nicely as an Athena sub. Her TPA is backed by a respectable 1703 attack. NA hasn’t had much experience with orb spawners yet, but they are powerful because they don’t replace any orbs of the same element. Ariel is particularly nice because she can add the possibility of another light TPA to any board that would allow it while also being on a 4-turn cooldown.

Lumiel – C+
Pros
  • Full board orb change tailor-made for Durga
  • Dark devil
  • The cutest
Cons
  • Uses outside Durga?
  • Lack of of devil orb changers limits leader skill
Notes
Most of what I said about Famiel also applies to Lumiel, swapping U&Y for Durga. Unfortunately, she doesn’t interact particularly well with any of dark’s more popular orb changers. She could see use as an Anubis sub, whose actives would combine for a 50% dark board, but at that point she’s just a much worse Kali. Sadly, Durga is likely the least popular 5x combo god on NA, further diminishing her value. That being said, she’s a dark devil with a full board orb change; that is a powerful combination and it’s only a matter of time before we see a team where she can shine.

Pantheon Grade – C+

I tried my best to emphasize the best characteristics of each Angel, including their potential for the future, but judging them in their current state they are barely worth rolling for. Their uses as subs are just too narrow. Just looking at their awakenings, the lack of multiple offensive awakenings puts them closer to silver eggs While I’d like to stress that the HP/RCV bonus in their leader skills shouldn’t be underestimated, there are plenty of existing leaders that can do similar things. I’m confident that the Angels will be more relevant in the future — either through being subs for new leaders or balance changes, GungHo loves money after all — but the average player can’t waste their precious stones on a possibility. For most, I’d pass on rolling on the Angels, even if you have a leader like U&Y or Durga, and revisit them when their uses have expanded.
