I’ve had several weeks to think about what to write about Zhou Yu, but outside of a few fairly obvious applications there really isn’t much to say. In a way, he’s much like Sphinx where he isn’t necessarily poor, especially when compared to other farmable options, but most will only see him as an awoken uevo fodder. With that in mind, I’m going to trying to keep this post short and sweet.
Any Potential as a Leader?
Most of the farmable drops that have REM-dependent leader skill clauses are generally poor, but Zhou Yu isn’t a half bad lead. While 9x ATK for healers isn’t great, if you have a Xiao Qiao to activate his 1.5x HP clause then things start to look much better. HP is usually a healer team’s biggest weakness and there aren’t many healer lead pairs that give a 2.25x or greater total HP boost. While it’s a shame that XQ is off-color, she does contribute a water row and can serve as a poor heartmaker. The team ATK multiplier may be low, but can easily be augmented through rows and TPAs. A good starting place might be:
Of course, if you have all of these REM subs, you likely won’t have much use for Zhou Yu, but he does fill a niche of being a respectable tank lead if you don’t have one.
As A Sub?
In a vacuum, Zhou Yu has the basic qualifications to be a decent sub. He’s very similar to Kaguya, having a fast four-turn three-orb spawning active, a time extend and a TPA. The biggest difference is having a water row instead of a skill boost. While this gives him offensive flexibility, the loss of a skill boost is painful.
One of the most obvious applications is as a Skuld sub, but he’s a fairly poor choice there since Skuld doesn’t need much RCV help. I guess you could stack the team with physical subs to boost her HP, then rely heavily on Zhou Yu’s outstanding RCV for most of your healing needs.
He can also serve as a janky sub on some rainbow teams. He not only has a time extend, something still quite rare for a farmable monster, but he happens to cover two elements that rainbow teams have traditionally struggled with. At the very least, he can be a placeholder until you land that Awoken Isis or Sun Quan. He also has dragon typing, making him a decent Sonia Gran option.
That’s Pretty Much It, Man
Sadly, I don’t have anything else to say. I can usually garner some off the wall applications for farmable subs from YouTube, but I came up empty after several different searches.
He’s good, not great. I wouldn’t go out of my way to pick him up, but if for some reason you’re in the mid-game and can clear his dungeon he can certainly play a respectable stand-in until you get something better. Otherwise, have fun waking up your Hakus and eventually Karins.
