Collab Review – Final Fantasy

The initial reaction to this REM is usually one of two things: excitement for actually getting Final Fantasy on NA or disappointment that the monsters are so outdated. As far as value, the disappointment is justified; at the rate PAD is power creeping, no card is going to look great after almost 200 days with no upgrades. That being said, the top-end of the collab has aged fairly well, much of that is due in large part to the haste mechanic being so powerful. Conversely, the low-end of the REM has never been relevant as GungHo didn’t price their hastes competitively enough. This pretty much sucks all value out of the collab, making it very risky to roll.

Regardless of the REM’s power, a major question for those that intend to roll is whether now is a good time to do so. FF is almost certainly going to see multiple installments on JP and in addition to uevos and balance updates there will certainly be more eggs from the games not already featured. Rolling now means you have a “better chance” of getting what you want, but if the collab ever returns you run the risk of dupes. Rolling later could be better value, but that’s assuming we even get the collab again (looking at you, Eva). It’s a tough call to make.

6-Star Gold Eggs

Grades are given relative to monsters of the same rarity.

Cloud – B+ (A+ as a system)
2030 - Cloud & Hardy-Daytona
Pros
  • The best system team NA has
  • 20.25x ATK and 2.25x HP is still pretty strong
Cons
  • Needs three total Clouds to reach his fullest potential.
Notes
When Cloud was first introduced he was one of the most amazing collab monsters ever released. While not overwhelmingly strong on his own, with his system team you had one of the best high-level farming teams in the game. Well, his system is still pretty strong on NA and is arguably the best system we have. While it won’t do top-end damage that Chinese systems do, it has significantly greater consistency, survivability and utility via fire Amaterasu.
Outside his system, Cloud isn’t all that great. He has decent sub selection that also includes Ilm and Apollo, but nothing that allows him to rival today’s top leads. As a sub he doesn’t really have a place. Elia is generally a better option for light teams and his machine type hasn’t bore any fruit; yet anyways.

Yuna – B+
2044 - Determined Summoner, Yuna
Pros
  • Damage reduction + haste is always a good thing
  • Two skill bind resists
Cons
  • Her shield is somewhat underwhelming compared to other options like Susano or DIza
Notes
I think Yuna is the best overall roll in the machine if you disregard the Cloud System. Damage shields will always be relevant and Yuna complements it well with a haste and two skill bind resists, a trait that was extremely scarce until recently. Healers are particularly desperate for damage shields, the only real alternatives in light being Sandalphon and Ganesha. Sandalphon is a bit more useful on healer teams since he can fulfill both offensive and defensive roles, but Yuna’s shield is quicker and makes the rest of the team better with her haste. Compared to non-light options her shield is somewhat underwhelming. Susano gets two extra turns on his shield for only two extra cooldown turns and Dark Izanami has a significantly higher up time. In the end, Yuna leaves a lot to be desired, but she’s still a solid option in light.
As a leader, she was pretty much dead on arrival even on JP, coming out on the heels of Awoken Ra’s release. There’s no real reason to seriously consider her as a leader, but a 25x lead whose sub pool isn’t limited by skill bind resists isn’t the worst thing ever.

Sephiroth – B-
2032 - Renegade Hero, Sephiroth
Pros
  • He’s Sephiroth?
Cons
  • Obsoleted by modern leads
  • Lacks a skill bind resist
Notes
Sephiroth has aged the worst of the 6-stars. While 20.25x ATK and 2.25x RCV is still pretty good, he was put to shame by Awoken Shiva and then put to rest by the MP Dragons (but what isn’t nowadays?). To make things worse, he isn’t a particularly good sub with Awoken Yomi generally being a better choice for full-board orb enhancing. Here’s hoping he gets a great uevo; he’s the one that needs it the most.

5-Star Gold Eggs

Grades are given relative to monsters of the same rarity.

It’s somewhat difficult to judge the FF 5-stars as they’re not quite as good as the usual collab 5-stars, but for their rarity you expect much more than from a silver egg. I’ll mostly be comparing them to the special REM 5-stars.

Squall – B+
2034 - Solitary Lion, Squall
Pros
  • An orb change + haste is great
  • Realistically costed cooldown at seven turns
  • Good awakenings
Cons
  • Fairly useless leader
Notes
Squall is pretty much the only 5-star worth anything in the REM. His orb change is priced correctly by today’s standards which makes him far and away better than anything else at this rarity. He may be strong, but where does he shine as a sub? He’s actually pretty nice with Horus’s updated leader skill, especially now that the Valks are even more difficult to obtain. He’s fine on Shiva, but there are better options.

Rinoa – B-
2036 - Sorceress's Successor, Rinoa
Pros
  • A bind-immune bind clearer. Yay.
  • An easy 25x leader
Cons
  • Water is the element that least needs a bind clearer
  • Terrible active rate when compared to Halloween Alraune
Notes
Rinoa would’ve been nice in fire or dark, but the other elements just have better, easier to obtain bind clear alternatives. Water in particular has a plethora of good options with Snow White, a mere silver egg, being on a comparable level if not flat out better. There’s something to be said for the haste, but that isn’t enough to save the card.
As a leader, an easy, combo-based 25x is pretty reasonable. Having two of her actives on the same team is bad, but at the very least the hastes improve the rest of the team.

Tidus – D
2042 - Fayth's Dream, Tidus
Pros
  • Nothing
Cons
  • Everything
Notes
There are troll golds, and then there’s Tidus. His leader skill is a joke. I guess he’s a BSonia sub, but it’s arguable if he’s any better than Bubblie.

Zidane – C
2038 - Trance Zidane
Pros
  • He’s better than Tidus?
Cons
  • Almost everything
Notes
Zidane has the most interesting active skill in the REM. He could’ve been a (bad) Zaerog∞ for wood, but they had to make him buff the skyfall chances for two elements instead of one. I can’t imagine many situations where two elements would be better than one.
He also has a mildly intriguing leader skill. While extremely tanky, a 5x ATK multiplier is worse than the Sonias. Perhaps a way around this would be pairing him with Ishida Mitsunari, resulting in 2.25x HP, 9x ATK and 1.5x RCV for attackers.

4-Star Silver Eggs

Grades are given relative to monsters of the same rarity.

The silver eggs are all pretty much garbage. It’s likely GungHo couldn’t correctly evaluate the power of hastes at the time — this collab was where they were introduced — and erred on the safe side. Hopefully they receive some buffs in the future. Seeing as none of them have skill up fodder, it’s doubtful any of them will be of any practical use in their current forms.

Ace- C
2046 - Agito Cadet, Ace
Pros
  • None
Cons
  • Cooldown is much too long for an insignificant effect
Notes
Ace would’ve been much more appealing had they dropped the dark damage enhance to shave off a few turns on his cooldown. In this way he suffers in the same way many of the Shinrabansho silvers do, but they’re overall more useful, if only as low cost leads. When compared to the awoken Norses’ actives, there’s obviously much room for improvement. While not much help can be expected for a silver egg, hopefully they decide to throw him some love in the future.

Aemo – C+
2048 - Dimensional Travelers, Aemo & Mootie
Pros
  • Shes cute?
  • Good awakenings
  • Decent sub for a newer player’s Bastet team
Cons
  • Change the World is an outdated mechanic
  • Poor leader skill
Notes
Unfortunately, Change the World effects aren’t particularly valuable these days, especially since many combo teams can reach the same orb movement duration through time extend awakenings. In extreme cases her active could actually decrease your movement time. The ability does have value for setting up burst boards like Venus does for light row teams, but Aemo doesn’t bring enough value otherwise to justify using a sub slot on her.

Wol – B
2050 - Knight of the Dawn, Wol
Pros
  • Most reasonable active and leader skills of the silver eggs
Cons
  • Limited number of light attackers
Notes
Wol is the best overall silver egg, but that’s not saying much. His active would actually be pretty nice if you could skill it up. Compare it to Athena’s orb enhance that is seven turns as well, except trading the enhanced wood orbs for a one-turn haste. He could’ve been a ghetto Venus replacement if he had healer typing.

Vivi – F
2040 - Trance Vivi
Pros
  • Trippy art
Cons
  • Everything
Notes
This card is actually pretty insulting. The active is a joke and the leader skill is even worse. Who thought counterattacks were a good idea? MP is MP, I guess.

Conclusion

Well, this REM is pretty bad, but when you think about it, it’s not like it’s all that much worse than the usual collab. There’s still a good chase card in Cloud, there’s decent value in the rest of the 6-stars and the rest of the REM is pretty much garbage: a pretty typical collab. As such, there’s very little reason to roll outside of an emotional attachment to a certain character. Here’s hoping that JP gets some nice improvements to the REM and that they quickly find their way to NA thereafter. Until then, hopefully everyone enjoys their Fat Chocobo.

I’m personally hoping to roll a Yuna, but I’m not going to burn packs like I usually do for collabs. I’m hoping this REM will pass over much like Halloween did, allowing me to save for what is hopefully a great Christmas REM.

  1. “Pros
    •He’s Sephiroth?”

    Good enough for me 😀

But seriously. If the silvers had skillups, I think this REM would be almost as good as Shinrabansho, but as is it’s VERY hard to justify rolling unless you plan on spending a lot for the cloud system. I’ll be giving it all of my free rolls I’ve saved up/get for the duration in hopes of Sephiroth, and holding onto everything I get, even the silvers, because buffs are bound to happen in JP. I anticipate a significant buff to Sephiroth, a la Kenshiro, and a lot more characters added to the REM…

Zidane on a meimei team maybe? Have dark orb changers and his buff up? Other than that, 15% on a single color would have been MUCH better.

As far as the silvers go… Aemo is who I’m hoping for. Because, while she may be useless, she has good art at least 😛

Tidus is pretty sad right now. The only place I could imagine using him is as a burst on ALakshmi… and even then he’s still worse than any of her other options XD

    • Yes, let’s hope for a significant buff for one of the most iconic game villains of my childhood. Kenshiro or Levi would be a good starting point. Good luck on your rolls!

  2. I’m not too hopeful for FF part 2 after the FotNS reveals this week. Gungho seems to be aiming for (game8) A+ leader ratings on the best collab gold eggs, plus one S rank that is also available in the MP shop, with the rest being a smattering of subs and new player/low cost B and C tiers. Doesn’t give folks that already have S rank teams much incentive to roll, beyond collecting or nostalgia.

    • Nothing is certain yet, but considering the collab was announced on the Final Fantasy Portal app — the app you were referring to — and is using the Fat Chocobo art, there’s a pretty good chance.

  3. I’m just hyped for Fat Chocobo. Finally a farmable alternative to DKali Definitely inferior, I know, but something is better than nothing.

    Like

    • The Kalis were a bit annoying since they were so essential to rainbow teams. Now with Volsungr, it’s nice to know that there are non-IAP alternatives to both.

  4. This game makes me nuts. I know that PaD is designed to make you throw money at the problems it creates.. but still arggghhhh.
I have explained the whole collab REM situation to non-pad players like this:
There’s a contest on one flavour of soda. Odds are 1% chance of winning. But, all contest-marked cans are filled with pee instead of soda so you don’t even get something useful for your money. The soda company consoles you by telling you at least you can get 1 cent for the can and that you can use the pee to kill weeds.

  5. I’m not throwing any stones at the FFREM. Any danger of a review of the ‘free’ cards you can pick up from running the dungeon? Surely Kefka has its uses?

    • I never really considered analyzing farmable collab monsters, but maybe I should change that.

I think Kefka has one of the largest nukes in the game and I’m pretty sure he has an Arena clear video out there somewhere.

      Like

        • Yeah I it must’ve been a C10 clear I was thinking of. Although if someone can clear Arena with a farmable Beelzebub team, then I’d like to think someone with enough dedication could do Kefka, too.

          • I’m still looking… I’m sure SOMEBODY was crazy enough to do it 😛

But real talk, a farmable 4/4/4 leader with up to a 500K nuke is no joke. The team dies to binds pretty hard, but there has to be at least one set of 20 random encounters without a single bind.

The team I’m thinking of is Kefka/Pandora/Zera/Zuoh/Gunma. It’d take forever, but imagine the bragging rights… 😀

  6. Welp, all I cared about was Fat Chocobo, and they gave that to us for free so – awesome. No rolls for me this collab.

  7. Not so much hyped over the REM as much as I am over the farmables. Those 12 cost devil drops are pretty much the subs Darkseid demands for murdering his way through Tengu, Gaia, and Xuanzang, right?

    Like

    • It depends on the team you have, but if you have the DKalis I’d say Ra Dragon. But if you intend on using the Cloud System, you’re going to have to get your skill ups in this event so you’re going to have to do that first.

      Like

        • I guess it comes down to what you want more, an endgame lead or farming lead. Without knowing what other teams you have, I’d probably choose Ra Dragon. If you intend to use the Cloud System, I’d skill them up, then finish Ra Dragon, then finish Cloud.

          Like

          • Got it, thanks!

Yea, right now I use DQXQ (XQ evo) as my main farming / day to day. LKali for hard dungeons. (Working on ABastet). ROdin challenge leaders for super easy push button farm. And…….GrOdin/Ama poison for metal dragons, tama, wed/fri, etc.

            Like

            • Yeah, I think you’ll eventually want both, but that Ra Dragon team will allow you to stomp almost all endgame content so I’d prioritize that after Cloud skill ups.

              Like

  8. something that might be worth mentioning, i think Yuna is probably the best 12* cost cards out there right now. if you want an easy-peasy tengu team, i’m pretty sure Yuna would wreck any cost restricted dungeon.

  9. Something I really like about this collab is the amount of XP you get from the dungeon. It makes it less painful to run for skill-ups. Having rare drops suck, especially when most of the event won’t be 2.5x skill-ups.

  10. In retrospect, a haste mechanic without Ultimecia seems like a missed opportunity.

They’ll probably play it safe balance-wise for future uevos, but I’m anxious to see their choice of additional characters. A world where we all run Lightning system for a guaranteed Arena clear is in my eyes the worst possible future.

    • Just as long as they give us some FF4 or 6 characters in the REM, I can easily overlook other mistakes. I’m guessing we can expect another dungeon with FF7+ bosses, too.

  11. Decided to roll once for nostalgia (if only there were cards from 1-6 as well… 😦 ), and to add a bit of support in the hopes that we get future FF collabs as well, and ended up getting Rinoa! I have no team I’d use her on yet, but I definitely didn’t want any of the silvers, and Rinoa is a cutie, so no complaints here. Hopefully her active gets buffed to include an orb change or increase water skyfall when the collab gets renewed~
With my last three rolls being HKali, Haku #2 (so I can finally make an Awoken Haku!), and now Rinoa, my REM luck seems to be turning around 😀 *knock on wood*

  12. So I managed to roll 3 clouds… should I gamble on a 4th to guarantee an inherent system or is it enough to quit as is? Mostly because I heard cloud has a relatively easy time on Scarlet. Also, if you don’t have ilm, does Superman work instead?

    Like

    • PS: which system is better: meimei, z8 with haku haku setsu setsu, or cloud? (basically can they all handle scarlet which is what I am currently gunning for)

      Like

      • Yea… I didnt honestly realize system teams existed until this collab, and I can’t seem to find good resources on it either -.-

        Like

        • System teams were made fairly irrelevant by Shiva Dragon. I don’t use my Meimei System anymore. Cloud and Scarlet are really the only worthwhile systems and even that’s arguable with Shiva Dragon.

          Like

          • Good to know, thank you… makes me sorta sad that I went out of my way to build a meimei system team. At least cloud is still worthwhile, so I guess I’ll take that

            Like

            • Nope. It was a goal I had set for myself and it was fun and rewarding to complete it. I had low expectations for the team and it was much more useful than I thought it would be. It was a good two month run, a lot more than I get out of other teams.
