Thoughts on the PCGF Voting Results (Winter 2016)

2972 - Green Earth Wind Dragon Caller, Kaede

We’ve all seen this coming for a long time now and have already experienced the 6-star plague invade last time’s lineup, but, at least for me, the reality finally hit home that the PCGF will never be what it once was. Sure, there were always questionable inclusions, but this time, instead of them occurring because good information failed to trickle down to the lowest common denominator, it happened because there’s little other choice. The bulk of high-impact cards either being shifted outside of the standard REM or to 6-star GFEs leads to 11 of the 25 cards being 6-stars and I can’t really find fault in it; in a popularity contest, what else is left for people to vote for? Even though 6-stars are featured every godfest, people are still going to vote for them regardless of the impact on overall value. The way GungHo has shifted the game away from pantheons made this outcome inevitable; I mean, JP had 10/25 (and this was before the Kanna uevo) and KR also has 11/25 so it’s not like NA is some sort of anomaly.

This is still a great opportunity for veterans chasing a handful of specific cards, dupes be damned. Particularly if those cards would never be featured together otherwise. It’s also still decent for new players with few dupes as there are plenty of core team building blocks whose quality helps overcome the lack of overall value per roll, but on the other hand, variance hits harder which can be difficult for such a player to cope with. For everyone else, it’s time to shift expectations from a highly anticipated event to one that’s just another godfest and adjust their stone budgets accordingly.

Anyways, I’ll once again go over the best and worst of the voting. The over/underrated categories lost a dimension since the voting tallies are hidden, but I’ll keep them around anyways. Just remember that these are just my opinions, heavily influenced by how I personally play the game. If you disagree, I encourage you to let me know in the comments.

Thoughts on the Tentative PCGF Voting Results (Spring 2016)

2592 - Judging Scale Steel Star Goddess, EschamaliSimilar to last time, NA did a great job voting. Outside maybe Yomi, I wouldn’t consider any of the top votes unworthy of selection. It’s also clear that a good portion of the voters keep track of what’s happening on JP.

However, I do wish less 6-stars made it in. Using the tentative voting results, there will be eight 6-star GFEs out of the 25 featured gods (32%). There’s also speculation that Sherias and Baldin will debut — much like Saria and Ryune last time — bringing the 6-star share to about 35%. By comparison, the typical godfest has about 29-31 featured gods with about 9-10 being 6-stars (29-32%). While the 6-star percentage is similar, the PCGF is slated to have horrible rates due to having less featured gods with the same portion of 6-stars; for those that don’t know, the more featured gods there are, it actually increases the chance of landing one of them, although it doesn’t change the chances of rolling a specific card (correct me if I’m wrong if this is no longer the case, but we’ve only had two-pantheon godfests for a while now so it would be difficult to identify a change in rates). The poor rates could have been helped if fewer 6-stars were voted in. However, if NA follows suit with JP’s last PCGF — which the top 25 limit seems to indicate — the 4x rates will make this complaint moot. Let’s hope they follow through even though it isn’t our 4-year anniversary yet; if they don’t, this PCGF will be a huge letdown. Either way, though, the fewer 6-stars there are the better the rates will be, but I doubt players’ preoccupation with them will ever change despite that. Personally, the 6-stars are great since that’s all I need, but for the average player there’s more value if there’s less of them.

Anyways, I’ll once again go over the best and worst of the voting. Which was actually pretty difficult this time since I didn’t have much issue with the results and the voting was so tight. Just remember that these are just superficial opinions and I encourage you to let me know about any differences in opinion in the comments.

Paprika and Reco Demonstrate Rukia

The team is pretty much everything I imagined and more. 32k HP with 2.25x RCV? Scheat shitting out damage and her lacking SBRs not hurting the team? Skuld being useful? The only thing really missing is unbindability on Rukia, but since the team does so much damage it can spare the sub slot for a bind clearer in most cases. I’m not much of a fan of Bleach, but this is the first collab card since Gon (and before that Baggi) that I’d really like to see make its way over here.

Now here’s Reco clearing Arena 2 with her:

Quick Thoughts on the JP Stream 2/19/16

With 10x starting exactly with the JP stream, I haven’t had much time to collect my thoughts on what was revealed. Now that I’m looking for an excuse to take a break, now seems as good a time as any.

  • 100 cards getting additional awakenings – This was something I never would have expected, but it makes a good amount of sense. For old pantheon uevos, it revitalizes old design space, something that GungHo has seemed desperate to do lately if their recent focus on the uninspired jammer- and poison-based leader skills are any indicator. It also makes dupes that much more desirable as I’m sure an Apollo with an SBR and devil killer or a Karin with both god and dragon killers will be quite appealing in certain situations. This is a pretty smart move by GungHo, and they don’t even need to make new artwork for it. As for the non-pantheon cards, all I can say is “thank god”.
  • New farmable uevos – I concluded in my Yamatsumi post that non-Special Descended drops just can’t compete since the awakening deficit puts them at too far a disadvantage. I’m not sure if these uevos will actually make any of them top-tier subs even with additional awakenings, but at least newer players might find them worthwhile now (especially the Mystic Knights who were already pretty decent filler subs as-is). Aamir will likely have the biggest impact — assuming his upgrade is even halfway decent — but I’m most excited for Cauchemar; it’d be amazing if he could be relevant to Awoken Astaroth in some way.
  • Collabs – Whatever. I’ve decided to never get excited for a collab again, even if it’s one we’ve already gotten. I’ll save my excitement for when we actually get it.
  • PADR – NA never. Sounds kinda neat, though.
  • Skill inheritance – We still don’t know the full specifics, so I’ll still be withholding judgment.
  • Old collab rotations – I don’t know if Super Gunma will be useful even with skill inheritance, but at the very least it looks like a decent target for wood teams trying to get an effect they otherwise wouldn’t have access to. But, once again, since we don’t know all the details we don’t even know if it’ll be a valid target.
  • New uevos – I’m not particularly impressed, but there’s some potential.
    • Yamato – The rows are great, but what I’m most excited about is his new Raoh attacker qualification. This not only means Leilan has an orb change combo besides Belial, but now the team doesn’t have to rely on Sanada as its only real heartmaker. I could easily see Leilan-Yamato being the core of Raoh teams for some time to come.
    • Wukong & Avalon Drake – Neither are all that exciting, but the triple skill boosts create more possibilities for non-fire farming teams. For light, I’ve been keeping Juza in mind for a while now and maybe Wukong’s extra skill boost can make such a team an option in the future (and because NA getting Tora is highly unlikely).
    • Pandora – So that prediction based off the card ID came true after all. As a time extend shitter, I’m quite happy. I have enough Pandoras saved up to pretty much go with any combination of awoken or uuevo that’s necessary. Now I’m hoping her Summer form gets some buffs.
    • Artemis – It’s somewhat hilarious that Marine Rider of all things got a bump in relevancy after I’ve basically shit on Rider-style orb changes since this blog began. Summer GSonia also gets a boost. U&Y, Skuld and wood Karin might end up being decent choices even though they’re water-main; it depends on how viable a mixed-element team actually is. I’m curious to see what JP does with her.
    • Zuoh – Getting a SBR several months too late for Meimei. Him useless as a leader shouldn’t change, but he’s still great to pair with Pandora so he should see more sub use now. Where’s Ilm’s? He’s actually relevant.
    • Gadius & Typhon – Pretty boring, but unbindability opens up a new set of uses for them.
    • Skuld – I really want to find a use for her. Here’s hoping NA gets the Bleach collab so I can throw her on a Rukia team (along with that Scheat I don’t have yet).
