Thoughts on the PCGF Voting Results (Winter 2016)

We’ve all seen this coming for a long time now and have already experienced the 6-star plague invade last time’s lineup, but, at least for me, the reality finally hit home that the PCGF will never be what it once was. Sure, there were always questionable inclusions, but this time, instead of them occurring because good information failed to trickle down to the lowest common denominator, it happened because there’s little other choice. The bulk of high-impact cards either being shifted outside of the standard REM or to 6-star GFEs leads to 11 of the 25 cards being 6-stars and I can’t really find fault in it; in a popularity contest, what else is left for people to vote for? Even though 6-stars are featured every godfest, people are still going to vote for them regardless of the impact on overall value. The way GungHo has shifted the game away from pantheons made this outcome inevitable; I mean, JP had 10/25 (and this was before the Kanna uevo) and KR also has 11/25 so it’s not like NA is some sort of anomaly.

This is still a great opportunity for veterans chasing a handful of specific cards, dupes be damned. Particularly if those cards would never be featured together otherwise. It’s also still decent for new players with few dupes as there are plenty of core team building blocks whose quality helps overcome the lack of overall value per roll, but on the other hand, variance hits harder which can be difficult for such a player to cope with. For everyone else, it’s time to shift expectations from a highly anticipated event to one that’s just another godfest and adjust their stone budgets accordingly.

Anyways, I’ll once again go over the best and worst of the voting. The over/underrated categories lost a dimension since the voting tallies are hidden, but I’ll keep them around anyways. Just remember that these are just my opinions, heavily influenced by how I personally play the game. If you disagree, I encourage you to let me know in the comments.

Pad-Plus appears to be back. Still not sure why they skipped last week, but they did change their format very slightly so maybe it has to do with that. Game8 also changed their co-op list to include leaders that are co-op-focused. This was a much needed improvement as the list now isn’t just a rehash of the solo list with a few co-op leaders scattered in. It’s also good to see MAthena getting some love.

	Ranked Sites: Game8 (S) Armored Batman is now a 64x leader with a 75% heart-cross shield. He has an advantage over Gremory and Typhon Ana in that he has no type restrictions, but this doesn’t actually mean too much in practice as all the good heartmaking subs are devil, dragon or balanced anyways. Not supplying any time extends himself makes him more difficult to use.
	Ranked Sites: AppMedia (S), PadPlus (12) Seeing as AppMedia is the only site showing her some love, I don’t anticipate her making the list next week.

	Change: Added to 3 The addition of Dantalion, Paimon and Typhon Ana solidifies the grip GFEs have on the current tier list, making up 4/7 of the top two tiers and 8/17 of the top three (8/15 if you exclude co-op leads Liu Bei and MZeus). Here’s hoping that the glut of new GFEs stops for a while; hell, I think most players might find a new MP series a refreshing change of pace, as myopic as that sounds. I’m curious how GungHo will handle pantheon cards going forward.
	Change: Added to ❀ This is an interesting time for the Balboa-Artemis pair to resurface, especially since it appeared on GameWith and AppMedia in the same week. My first instinct was to see if there was anything interesting on YouTube, but either there wasn’t or it was buried under the countless Natti videos. So maybe the reason is as simple as the buffs they recently received; the 2x ATK bonus for matching both wood and water was boosted to 3x, giving the team a robust 2/36/2. It also makes sense that Artemis was the only one to show up since neither Ares or Hermes have a respective Balboa to pair with (I wouldn’t count Cao Cao and Sun Quan) and Apollo and Persephone’s 2.25/20.25/2.25 isn’t nearly as impressive.

I wouldn’t expect a top-tier lead to come out of a seasonal REM anyways (Miru being the exception).

Wood is now the best element in the game; never would’ve guessed that only a month ago. It has the best endgame leads in Kaede and Ronove and a strong co-op farming presence with Liu Bei and Zeus-Dios. While Machine Athena hasn’t exactly impressed anyone, she’ll be another valuable tool in the arsenal. Speaking of which, this might finally be Ragnarok Dragon’s time to shine, fitting well on both Ronove and Machine Athena.

	Change: Added to 1 A 5-star being one of the best leaders in the game is only exciting until you find out his best subs are an MP Dragon and a couple 6-star GFEs. Miru is still the best poverty lead option.
	Change: Added to 2 I overrated Gremory and underrated Ronove, but I feel that without Kaede as a sub they’re closer than the tier lists might lead on. I should have factored in the active-reliant leader skill being much worse than it appears, though, and Ronove’s rainbow activation is easier than it seems when you consider his best team has movement time on the same level as Ra Dragon.

	Ranked Sites: Game8 Co-op (A), AppMedia (S+), PadPlus (1) I’m a bit surprised Kenshin didn’t rate on any of the lists outside AppMedia. Even with only two crosses, the damage is pretty good and considering those are the only two matches you have to make, he can be used effectively by the average player.
	Ranked Sites: AppMedia (S+), PadPlus (2) Saito’s damage isn’t as ridiculous as Kenshin’s, but he more than holds his own and the difference isn’t that great when you consider you’ll only be making one or two crosses in most situations. It’s unfortunate that he has an active-reliant leader skill; as we’ve seen with cards like Ichigo, that isn’t a great place to be.

For the first time a while, I was ready to do this post on Saturday, but I was waiting on Pad Plus to update their popularity list. Turns out they were actually on time, but they slightly changed things so my script wasn’t picking up the latest page. Then they also slightly changed their format so I had to update scrape script.

	Ranked Sites: Game8 (SS), Game8 Co-op (S), GameWith (S), AppMedia (S+), PadPlus (1) The consensus seems to be that she’s very strong, but not on Kaede’s level. I don’t think anyone would disagree with that. All other comparisons aside, in practice she’s certainly inferior since she doesn’t have as much movement time as Kaede or Miru. Player skill has never been a stated criteria for these lists, but I’d be surprised if that didn’t play a role in her judgment.
	Ranked Sites: Game8 (S), GameWith (SS), AppMedia (S+), PadPlus (2) Perhaps to many people’s surprise, Ronove is doing about as well as Gremory in these lists. While the rainbow + heart-cross playstyle might sound intimidating, unlike Gremory, Ronove’s team has plenty of time extends. And, as stated last week, his active is much stronger than it looks in text.
	Ranked Sites: Game8 (A), Game8 Co-op (S), GameWith Farming (S), PadPlus (9) There’s been much talk about how good Cao Cao actually is, but at least from the aggregate’s perspective, Game8 appears to be the outlier. We’ll see where he lands when he leaves the holding tank next week.
	Ranked Sites: AppMedia (S+) 2916x ATK sounds quite impressive, but when you see the team in practice, the damage numbers aren’t as big as you might think (still large, but I was expecting way more). Mainly because your combo count is so low and the only offensive awakening you can consistently take advantage of are OEs. However, I guess saying 8+ digits of damage is “low” just reflects how ridiculous teams are nowadays. Perhaps I’ll be more impressed once JP gets to play with the cards themselves instead of just watching a demo; I’ll reserve judgment until then.
	Ranked Sites: AppMedia (S+) Saito sure looks great on paper, but it’s hard to judge a card just by that. As with Kenshin, I’ll be waiting for videos out of JP.

Sorry for the delay, busy holiday weekend and all. However, it turns out that the wait was somewhat of a good thing as now I’m able to incorporate GameWith’s latest changes, namely the addition of an SSS-tier (sigh). It’s actually problematic when a site adds a new, top tier. The main reason is that I weighted cards in their old top tier as a 1 out of 1, but now that there’s a new top tier, how much do I devalue those cards? For now, I think the new weights I chose work, but there may be some transition in the future as I try to balance things out.

	Change: 1➞2 Xiang Mei represents all the old tier-1 cards (Ra Dragon, Sherias Roots) that got bumped down due to GameWith’s new SSS-tier. There’s little doubt in my mind that Kaede is the undisputed best lead in the game, with only maybe Gremory able to occupy the same space. It’s always sad to see old leaders drop, especially when they’re still amazing, but that’s just the way tier lists work.
	Change: Added to 2 No surprise here.
	Change: Added to 3 This placement in tier-3 seems correct as Robin Hood is extremely powerful, but not quite up to Nobunaga’s level.

	Ranked Sites: Game8 (SS), Game8 Co-op (S), GameWith (S), AppMedia (SS), PadPlus (15) Compared to fellow heart-crosser Kaede, Gremory losses some defensive power (58% vs. 75%), but gains much in return, namely a 144x multiplier and bind immunity. True, her leader skill restricts her sub pool, but dark has no problems supplying quality devils and the inclusion of balanced types adds cards like Xin Hua and Typhon to the mix. Her major downside compared to Kaede is her active skill’s lack of haste, meaning there’s no possibility of a “system”; systems are generally overrated, but in the case of things like the heart-crossers and Xiang Mei, the consistency brings near-invulnerability with it. Game8 and AppMedia seem to agree that she’s on Kaede’s level, but GameWith doesn’t; I’m curious to see where she ends up when her time in the holding tank is up.
	Ranked Sites: Game8 (S), GameWith (B), AppMedia (S) Ronove may not be as good as Kaede or Gremory, but it’s likely he’s being underrated, just like Sumire (and Miru before her). I initially thought his active skill was complete trash beyond serving as a base for skill inheritance. However, after watching this video by Paprika, it becomes apparent that it’s quite strong, especially when used in conjunction with Ragnarok Dragon and Kaede, and only gets better the more hazard orbs a dungeon spawns. Of course, a player of Paprika’s skill level would make any leader seem amazing, but even though the color requirement on top of the heart-cross seems like a steep slope to climb for most players, it’s hard to deny that Ronove is quite strong.
	Ranked Sites: Game8 (A), Game8 Co-op (S) Game8 must be out of their minds. First, yes, Cao Cao is a strong leader. However, tier lists only care about the strongest cards and their relative placement. In this regard, can Cao Cao really be compared to the likes of Sumire, You Yu and Nobunaga? And I don’t know, but Ronove looks pretty damned strong, too. There’s always a chance that I’m underrating Cao Cao — I did the same thing with his split uevo about a year ago and look how good he turned out being — but I just don’t think he’s up to snuff with the other leaders in the same tier. So far Game8 is the only site that rated him, but we’ll see where he winds up once he’s released from the tank.
	Ranked Sites: GameWith (B) Sarasvati is no You Yu, but the fact that a uuevo can even be compared to an MP card means it’s pretty impressive. I don’t expect the other sites to follow suit with GameWith — the bar to make these lists is so high at this point — but it’d be nice to see her sneak into the lower tiers. I’m personally a big Sarasvati fan and plan on using her in the future.

Not too much happened this week, so I’ll be using this opportunity to take bit of breather and keep the comments brief. One of the few things that happened was Game8 making what is essentially an honorable mention tier which consists of many of the leads that were booted last week. Considering I was complaining about how exclusive their list was last week, this is a welcome change. However, since this isn’t a “real” tier, I’ll be giving any card that appears there minimal points, similar to what is given to AppMedia’s S- tier.

	Change: 2➞1 Granted, the preset team given to us in the last JP Challenge Dungeons was garbage, but I’m still not as high on Sherias Roots as all the lists appear to be. It’s not because he’s lacking power, either, but rather that everything looks relatively weak compared to Kaede.
	Change: 3➞2 I’m glad the lists are slowly coming around on Miru, but I still believe Sumire needs some love. I wonder if their places would be reversed had Reco chosen Sumire instead? Yes, this might be giving a single streamer too much credit, but I’d have a hard time believing that he didn’t have a significant role in her current popularity (and we all know popularity definitely has a role in how these tier lists play out). I guess the June Bride REM has a strong influence, too.
	Change: ❀➞3 Pandora is one of the few beneficiaries of being included in Game8’s new consolation prize tier. This just goes to show that it doesn’t take much for a card to see movement in the aggregate list.

This is a help thread, so please feel free to ask questions about just about anything concerning the godfest or your teams, box and progress in general.

Yawn. Coming off the PCGF, there probably aren’t too many people that have ammunition left for this godfest. I’m not sure why GungHo is so desperate to push both Constellation pantheons, but they’re doing their best here by pairing them with two of best overall pantheons in the game.

Anyways, here are the rules:

• I will only take box questions that supply a PADherder. It makes it much, much easier for me to give good advice this way (you could say I can’t give good advice without the sorting options). Try PadListener to sync if you’re on Android (if it works for you), otherwise use this method.
• Box/roll questions that don’t supply rank, IAP status and main teams will be ignored. Any other information you want to supply will only help.
• Please check the FAQ after the break before asking a question. Questions that aren’t covered by the FAQ will be prioritized; questions that don’t may be ignored.
• WordPress flags comments with multiple links. I still get the comment, I just have to approve it manually for it to show up on the site. So if your comment doesn’t show up, this might be the case.
• I generally reply on a first come, first serve basis, but if there’s a low hanging fruit I’ll address that first.
• I will post a comment in bold red when I stop taking questions for the day or end the post altogether. Please look for and respect these cutoffs before posting! I’ll allow questions after the day 1 cutoff to queue up for the next day, but no new questions will be taken after the day 2 cutoff.
• No new questions will be taken after the godfest ends. Questions asked in other posts may be ignored; please wait for the next godfest!
• Follow-ups to existing questions will be taken as long as the post is still open for comments.
• I’ll close the post for comments a few hours after the godfest ends.
